2008 - a year that has started off with some extremem volatile
weather that will continue over the next few months, according to the weather
forecast.
The recent Blacktown hail storm saw many companies and residents experience
total roof failure, primarily those roofs made from asbestos. Asbestos over the
years becomes quite brittle and weathered. Hail stones as large as golf balls
punctured the roofs, leaving gaps and holes causing extensive contamination
internally. Asbestos pieces were randomly scattered throughout commercial and
residential premises. This resulted in lost production, lost time, not to mention
lost $$$! It couldn't have come at a more inconvenient time - right before
Christmas.
Replacing your old roof will ensure better resistance, keeping your company
watertight and productive in spite of the storm.
The following story is a typical scenario for factories and businesses subjected
to the December hail storm.
"We operate a large distribution warehouse that had a Super Six asbestos roof on it.
The roof never gave us much trouble apart from the odd leak, so I never gave the
roof a lot of thought.
On the 3rd of December 2007, that all changed. The hail came down and through the
roof it went. I ended up with a building that had hundreds of holes and water
pouring in. If that was not a big enough problem, the building was full of asbestos
fragments and all staff had to be sent home as the area was deemed contaiminated -
what a disaster! First thing that needed to be done was to cover the roof. This
took time to organise with water still coming in every time it rained.
My business had stopped operating with clients yelling for supplies. My staff
were unable to enter the contaminated building; this cost me big time. I had no
insurance for lost income or lost stock due to a hail storm. Luckily I have
insurance for the roof.
A month went by and we couldn't get back into the building. We are still trying to
sort out cleaning of stock, what to keep and what to get rid of.
The whole exercise just about finished me off. If I had only changed my asbestos roof
before the storm all this would not of happened. The asbestos work it tax deductible,
the building will look better, be cool and worth more."
